Dr Fariba Behnia-Willison’s work sits at the intersection of surgical practice, research and community impact. An Iranian-Australian endo-gynaecologist specialising in pelvic floor medicine, reconstructive surgery, and advanced laparoscopy, she is also the founder of FBW Gynaecology Plus and SmartFem, and co-founder of Desert Flower South Australia, the charitable arm of FBW Group, dedicated to offering holistic medical care and support to young people and women who are survivors of trauma, FGM, and those under-going gender reassignment.
Throughout her career, she has seen the profound and often under-recognised impact of gynaecological conditions on women’s health, dignity and quality of life. This has shaped a commitment not only to advancing treatment, but to elevating awareness and improving pathways for conditions historically overlooked in research, funding and public discourse.
Her clinician-led innovation is exemplified by the Victoria Graft System, a TGA-approved advancement in pelvic floor reconstruction, now used in more than 500 patients and supported by a growing body of peer-reviewed research across pre-clinical and clinical settings.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr Behnia-Willison contributes to healthcare policy and professional leadership through her role as an AMA SA Councillor, advocating for equitable, patient-centred care and ensuring women’s health remains a priority within the healthcare system.
Her work continues to bridge the gap between innovation and lived experience, advancing a model of care that is both evidence-based and deeply responsive to the needs of women.
Dr Behnia-Willison is a trailblazer in women’s health and multi-award winner, including the 2023 Telstra Best of Business Awards in the categories of Championing Health and Accelerating Women; and the AMA SA Diversity in Medicine Award. She has recently been recognised with a trifecta of honours: the Women in Innovation Award; the Australia Day Council’s South Australian Inspiring Women’s Award; and the Zonta Women of Achievement Award—reflecting her leadership across clinical care, innovation and advocacy in women’s health.
