About the Author
Evelyne Nakola was born and raised in Narok South, Kenya, where pastoralism is the main economic activity. As the eldest of eight siblings, she faced significant challenges, especially after narrowly escaping the harmful practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) at age 12. Witnessing the traumatic effects of FGM and early marriages on her cousins deepened her resolve. Despite societal pressures, her father refused to allow his daughters to undergo FGM, leading to rejection and hostility from their community.
Recognised for her passion for education, Evelyne received sponsorship for her undergraduate studies from the late Kenyan President, Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi. This opportunity inspired her to support young girls affected by FGM and child marriages, leading her to establish the Light of Life Organization. Through her work, she has supported over 700 girls, emphasising education and advocacy for women’s rights. Evelyne’s unwavering commitment to transform lives earned her the prestigious Global Women of Influence Awards in 2024.
