H.E. Maria Camilleri Calleja

Ambassador of Malta to the UAE, Permanent Representative of Malta to IRENA

H.E. Camilleri Calleja began her career in the Public Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2000, initially assigned to the Protocol and Consular Office and later covering Near Eastern Affairs. In 2002, she was posted as Deputy Head of Mission and Consul at the Embassy of Malta in Stockholm. In 2005, she broke new ground as Malta’s first female Consul-General in Tripoli, Libya.

In 2008, H.E. Camilleri Calleja served as Senior Official in various Mediterranean fora and as Board of Governors member for the Anna Lindh Foundation. In 2011, she was seconded as a Research Analyst to the Parliament. By 2013, she was back in the Ministry as Counsellor and Head of Unit for Africa and the EU Common Security and Defence Policy, as well as Secretary of the Council for Maltese Living Abroad.

In 2014, she was appointed as the Director of (International Development, Economic Affairs and European Institutions). And in December 2017, she became Director-General (Political and EU Affairs), coordinating Malta’s strategic foreign policy and bilateral relations.

On 23rd November 2020, H.E. Camilleri Calleja became first resident Ambassador of the Republic of Malta to the United Araba Emirates, and as Malta’s first-ever Permanent Representative of Malta to IRENA in Abu Dhabi, to IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera.
